WLHS has introduced a new creative class into the curriculum: AP Drawing. This advanced class allows students to explore art on a college level and in a more accessible environment. To earn a spot in this class, students have to submit a portfolio that contains fifteen pieces of original artwork. Each piece in the portfolio has to show exploration, revision, art skill, and general personal experience. After being accepted into the course, students are required to pay a $100 fee to take the exam. The total cost is around $1600 for every student to take the exam.
In order to help cover the expenses, art teacher Mrs. Mabry held a discussion with her class on how they wanted to fundraise. After the discussion, the class decided to host an art sale. The sale will feature a wide range of different mediums and art styles. This will include watercolor, colored pencil, pen, collage, graphite, and more.
In addition to student art, Mrs.Mabry will also be selling some of her personal art that she has created over the last 25 years. Mrs.Mabry will soon be retiring from teaching, so this could very well be the last time you have the chance to get art created by her.
After speaking with Mrs. Mabry about why you should consider buying art, she states:
“I am retiring next year, so this is your chance to purchase affordable ‘Mabry art.’ And it is for a good cause!”
These students can’t wait to share their art with the community. All money made from the art sale will go towards funding the class and supporting the program’s future at WLHS. Mrs. Mabry has been an important part of West Lauderdale’s arts community for decades. Supporting this art show is not only a way to help her students—it’s also a meaningful way to honor her lasting impact on the school.
