In a move that’s equal parts frustrating and defensible, Morton has decided to shift its first-round playoff game to East Central Community College (ECCC) instead of playing it on their own grass. The reason is simple: weather. Rain is forecast to start at noon on Friday and continue through at least 7 PM — exactly the kind of downpour that can turn a grass field into a slipping hazard. ECCC’s turf field with a drainage system guarantees the game gets played safely, keeping players off a soaked, muddy, low quality, dangerous surface.
But there’s a catch. More West Lauderdale fans — including ECCC alumni who bleed black and red — will likely pack the stands, while Morton supporters have to travel a longer distance for what should’ve been a less than 10 minute drive from the house. Home-field energy? Definitely diminished.
This matchup isn’t just about logistics; it’s personal. It’s a rematch from Week 2, when West Lauderdale edged Morton 28–27 in a heart-stopping finish at Morton. Stakes are higher, tempers will be hot, and every inch of the field will count. Moving the game protects players, but what it also does, is shift the atmosphere.
Be there if you can — this one is shaping up to be another classic. Go Knights!
