West Lauderdale High School is home to many students with unique stories, and this year Finja Hess traveled thousands of miles to create hers. Coming all the way from West Germany, north of the Ruhr area, Hess has joined the Knight’s family, bringing curiosity, excitement, and a desire to experience American life to the fullest.
Hess said she always dreamed of studying abroad, wanting to improve her English and also learn new cultures. She says she has always wanted to experience American football and has finally had the chance to do that. Hess also believes that having experiences and memories throughout your life helps shape who you are as a person and can also create confidence.
One American tradition she was excited to witness was high school football. She shared:
“I wanted to experience American football and I did. I loved it because for me it was a big part of my experience and also the pep rally has been everything.”
With football season behind her, Finja is now looking forward to Thanksgiving, which she feels is one of the most American holidays ever.
Adjusting to an American school came with a few surprises. One of the biggest differences for her was having classes that don’t change during the week. Finja was also shocked by how participation didn’t shape your grade but quizzes and tests do.
While she is enjoying her time here, there are things she misses deeply. She said:
“I miss my family and friends of course, however I also miss public transportation, and not having to rely on people to drive me around.”
Finja has made it a goal to try everything she can while she’s here, from new fast food restaurants to stores she has never seen before. Although it may not be the most common answer, she says she’s determined to live this experience to the fullest because she knows one day it will be a distant memory.
Hess continues her time at West Lauderdale, soaking in all the memories she can between fast food restaurants, time with friends, and classes that don’t change nearly as often as they do in Germany.
Hess knows her year abroad may only last a short time, but she’s already created memories that will last a lifetime. When you see her in the hallways, be sure to welcome her and even ask questions.
