One race left, nothing to lose—tension fills the air. Each runner lines up, yet one team stands out among them all: the West Lauderdale Knights. No matter what, these brave Knights knew who the real champions were.
On November 1, the Cross Country Knights competed at the MHSAA 4A State Cross Country Championships, where they secured their third consecutive state championship title.
This meet’s champion, Hunter Walton, dominated the competition, finishing with a time of 16:18. Following him were the rest of the State runners: Ryan Thompson placed fifth with a time of 17:05, Aaron Walls came in ninth with a time of 17:34, Brody Gressett placed fifteenth with a time of 17:51, Sawyer Windham finished twentieth with a time of 18:05, Stone Berg took thirty-fifth with a time of 18:34, and finally, Owen Allen finished forty-eighth with a time of 19:02.
Hunter Walton, not only this meet’s champion but also a senior, shared how running has shaped the way he faces challenges in life:
“Running has changed the way I see any challenge in life, because it has helped me see that working hard for a long time will eventually pay off.”

The girls did phenomenal as well, even if they didn’t place first. This outstanding team earned third place, with Jordan Shields leading the way. Shields placed sixth with a time of 21:59, followed by Maggie Graham in tenth with a time of 21:35. Rounding out the girls’ lineup were Nora Peterson in twenty-second with a time of 22:38, Ruby Fairchild close behind at twenty-third with a time of 22:31, Alli Walton in twenty-fifth with a time of 22:36, Abbie Cruse in thirty-fourth with a time of 23:00, and Lydia Stewart in forty-fifth with a time of 23:29.
Abbie Cruse, a senior who has been a Cross Country runner for six years, shared how her preparation changed since her first season:
“Preparation was different this year knowing it would be my last time competing with this team. It was bittersweet knowing this would be the end of a chapter that filled the past six years of my life with many memories.”
This meet was a time for the entire team to showcase the results of their hard work. It also marked both an ending and a beginning for the seniors. Through every hardship, this team played a magnificent season—serving as role models for the future runners to come.
