National Librarian Appreciation Day

National School Librarian Appreciation Day recognizes librarians that keep school libraries in order. Librarians are not only there to keep libraries organized but to also help students find the resources they need to learn and grow. School librarians help students to want to learn more even when they are not in the classroom. Most school librarians not only help students pick out what book to read but help with technology issues and more. West Lauderdale’s librarian was interviewed about her job.

West Lauderdale’s librarian, Ms. Fortenberry, answered several questions. When askedwhat prompted her to become a librarian, she responded, “I have always felt that it is extremely important to be intentional and invest in the lives of my students. I knew that by becoming the librarian, it would give me the privilege to interact with students and to be more intentional about investing in their lives.  I also knew that it would give me the opportunity to assist students with any assignments, projects, etc. if the opportunity arose.”

Fortenberry said,“Since I was a young child, I knew I wanted to work in education.  The first part of my teaching career was spent in elementary and middle school classrooms.  I have always desired to be at the high school level, and when this position came open, I felt like it was the perfect fit.” Fortenberry has been West Lauderdale High’s librarian for a year.

When asked about her favorite book, Fortenberry exclaimed, “My all-time favorite book is You Are Special by Max Lucado.  This is a book I always read to my classes at the beginning of the year, and I quickly fell in love with it. It encourages everyone to recognize what truly makes them special.”

Fortenberry’s favorite part of her job as a librarian is the people she deals with: “This really is the dream job!! I love the teachers and staff I get the privilege of working with. West has the sweetest community, and I love knowing I am a part of the best team.”

School librarians affect the lives of children every day, and they put love and dedication into their jobs.
