On Friday, February 28, National Honor Society members brought the stories of Dr. Seuss to life at West Lauderdale Elementary School for Read Across America. Dressed in fun costumes, complete with colorful Cat in the Hat hats, Thing 1 and Thing 2 outfits, and a Grinch suit, the high schoolers entertained the little Knights and had a wonderful time.
Senior Shae McDuffey took on the role of one of Suess’ most beloved characters, sporting a Grinch costume and reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas. She remarked that she initially felt “a little silly” in her outfit, but “it was all worth it” when she saw the kids’ ”faces light up as [she] walked into the room.”
Meanwhile, wearing the iconic striped hat, senior Kaitlyn Anthony chose to read The Foot Book. She shared how much she loved being there to observe the kids’ excitement, noting their amazement upon seeing “a high schooler [doing] something as simple as reading a book to them.”
Overall, the visit was a heartwarming experience for both the elementary students and the NHS members. Filled with animated storytelling and costumes, it offered a refreshing break from the busy schedules of many.
