As is implied by the name, October 27th is National Navy Day. Navy Day commemorates the men and women who have fought and died to protect our freedom. Established in 1922, Navy Day is celebrated annually by many people throughout the nation.
The Navy League sponsored the celebration of Navy Day to bring more attention to the U.S. Navy. The date was chosen to honor President Theodore Roosevelt, who greatly advocated for a larger and more powerful U.S. Navy, and contributed to its expansion and modernization. Although Navy Day would never go on to be a federal holiday, it would get special attention from President Warren Harding.
“From our earliest national beginnings, the Navy has always been, and deserved to be, an object of special pride to the American people,” Harding wrote to Navy Secretary Edwin Denby.
Navy Day acknowledges the men and women that have fought for our freedom. Some members of the navy have sacrificed everything to ensure that we can live in a free country. Navy Day is an excellent opportunity to thank a family member or a friend who has served or is serving in the navy.
