On Thursday, October 16th, Health Occupation Students of America students had the opportunity to go to University of Mississippi Medical Center to explore the different fields of medicine. This event presented a variety of paths within the medical field, offering firsthand looks at possibilities within each career.
HOSA students were given an overview of each program then attended three break-out sessions; each focusing on a unique area of study with hands-on experience. Such experiences included: surgery, nursing, and pharmaceuticals. Highlights of these were robotic surgery, inflating pig lungs to observe the respiratory system, and even compounding different medications.
According to Charlee Odom, “Our trip to UMMC was a great opportunity to learn more about different types of health professions and future job opportunities that HOSA students may be interested in.” Overall, these activities were an excellent way for our HOSA students to see possibilities of what could happen within any given field.
