September is known nationwide as National Suicide Prevention Month. Many people around the world lose their lives to suicide, and it is a devastating tragedy. This month is used to share awareness about the crisis of suicide and to help people realize that it is okay to reach out for help.
The dictionary definition of suicide is the act or instance of ending one’s life voluntarily and intentionally. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens. Furthermore, twenty-two percent of high school students reported having seriously considered suicide in the past year. People are led to commit suicide, due to things like bullying, child abuse, and violence. Every year, about 720,000 people die this way. Suicide could be committed at any time in life. Suicide is a big topic in our world and nation today.
National Suicide Prevention Month was created to raise awareness on the subject of suicide. The 988 Lifeline states, “The Lifeline network and its partners are working to change the conversation from suicide to suicide prevention, to actions that can promote healing, help, and give hope.” The 988 Lifeline works to prevent suicide. World Suicide Prevention Day is September 10. National Suicide Prevention Week is the week surrounding the World Suicide Prevention Day. During these times, people tell their own stories about their experiences with suicide. On that day, victims are remembered, and there is raised awareness for suicide.
If someone knows anyone who may be struggling, reach out to them and support them. Talk to them about suicide and try to talk them out of any self-harm. Connect them to a local crisis center. If someone knows is having suicidal thoughts reach out to a teacher, counselor, parent, friend, or someone trustworthy.
